Wood rot is usually caused by a fungal disease. More than 1,000 species of fungi exist that cause gradual rotting in tree trunks The presence of a fungal disease is a gradual decay causing a decline in strength.
Healthy trees in among dead ones are in danger of succumbing to the fungi that are attracted to the dead wood.Once the fungi enter the wood of the tree, the microorganisms begin feeding off the tree and compromising the integrity of the wood.
Prevention is potentially the most important factor in controlling fungal wood rotting conditions. Keep the area clear of dead wood and debris to discourage fungal activity. Prune trees regularly and exercise caution when mowing around trees. Routinely inspect trees for rotting damage and destroy infected trees as quickly as possible to prevent spreading.
